How to get a free iPod
December 3rd, 2005

Firstly, when I first had this idea I’d never heard of GeoffTech, or his iN Da Pod thing – neuro|laptop (on #lugradio) told me about it when I was explaining an outline of this idea over there….  As an aside, Mr. GeoffTech is quite personally annoying, because not only did he get a deeply similar idea to mine long before me, but he did this tube thing too, something I’ve always wanted to try – but in fancy dress. Git! :)

Anyway, free iPod – somewhat obvious now, considering Geoff did it first, but the details (I’ve made my differences italic, so you can see how my idea differed from his – not that I’d even heard of him when I had this….).

You register something like 50penceipod.com and create a site allowing people to send you 50p – they can send more if they like – the sender of the biggest sum gets to help decide how the iPod shall be bought. Every sender of 50p gets to pick a something for you to do with your new iPod. "Lick it", "Cook it", "Masturbate over it", etc – and gets a digital picture of said action.

Now, some rough groundrules:

  1. Requests can not break the law.
  2. Requests can not break the iPod.
  3. Requests can not break you.
  4. Requests can not be graphically obscene (as all pictures will be posted on 50penceipod.com).
  5. You reserve the right to "fake" the photos of any activity which you’re not comfortable performing (see rules 1 thru 4).
  6. Largest "giver" gets to pick your comedy action for the purcashe. Be that pretending to not understand that CDs won’t fit in an iPod at time of purchase, not speaking English, doing it in fancy dress, with a dodgy accent, or whatever….  Remember, mind you, the object is to be comedic with the purchase, not get thrown out without getting the iPod, so keep some sanity in the suggestions.
  7. iPod is yours to do with as you see fit after the experiment is over (incase everyone wants a bit of your poddygoodness).
  8. Donations are just that, donations. They are not purchasing a right to anything. The digital pictures are a "perk".
  9. The promotion can run as long as it takes to collect sufficent funds for your PRE-ANNOUNCED iPod model. (Unless, like Geoff, you’re lucky enough to get a better model for the same price)
  10. You reserve the right to refund a donation if you feel that it was given "not in the spirit of the event" – eg, someone is trying to get you in trouble by asking you to do something you’re not happy with.

I think that’s it….

So, remember, next time you’re in the Apple Store, and the person in front of you is paying for their iPod with pennies, and can’t find them in all the pockets of their rubber gimp suit – you probably heard it here first (or over at Geoff’s – probably).

Oh, and maybe you could make some really cool t-shirts with a 50pence piece instead of a clickwheel on the iPod and sell those to help raise cash too.  :)

Egglet!
December 2nd, 2005

While trolling thru some old backups I found an incomplete project of mine.

-rw-r–r–  1 darran darran  1130245 2003-04-13 08:32 egglet2.exe

The rules are simple.  Don’t let the eggs touch the top of the screen. Eggs must be in groups of 3 or more to be "dispatched" – "dispatch" by clicking on the eggs.

I’ve uploaded this as I’d like to think that one person, somewhere, will enjoy it, and while it may not be finished, it wasn’t a complete waste of time…. :)

It’s a .exe, flash6 "projector" (runs fine in latest wine pulled from http://wine.sourceforge.net/, that’s 0.9.2 btw :) ), I do still have the original .fla files but not the platform dependant .swf :( that was corrupted and I no longer have a working Flash author setup to recompile the movie.  Please, if you do, don’t bother offering because I’m not uploading almost 60MB of data so you can rebuild me a half-meg flash movie that if I cared about enough to want back, I’d still have Macromedia Flash installed, but thanks anyway :)

edit: While I’ve not developed games in a while playing back this I can see a number of things I would have done differently to make the game a much better play, and look and feel…. (like showing the score when you’re dead – but then again, there was a whole online highscore table routine that I never finished too….)  I’m half-quarter-semi-interested in finishing this, but not got the time! Pah!
